You may know about the term “impacted teeth.” Impacted teeth are pearly whites that are surrounded by soft tissues, also known as the gums within the oral cavity. Because human jaws are smaller than they were in the past, wisdom teeth normally don’t have enough room to advance properly. When they do advance, they often do so crooked and improperly. In some cases, when the wisdom teeth grow in partially but not totally, debris can become wedged between the pearly whites and the gums, leading to infection and eventual gum disease. This is why doctors will recommend taking out the wisdom teeth even if they haven’t erupted all the way.
