Dental attrition is a term used to describe excess wear and tear on a tooth that meets up unnaturally in your bite pattern. As time goes by, more and more tooth enamel can wear away, exposing the outer edge of the dentin layer. If you’ve struggled to maintain good oral hygiene, this could cause a new cavity to form in the compromised enamel and dentin of the tooth.

So long as the bacteria hasn’t invaded the pulp or root of the tooth, Dr. Barbara Lewis-Heywood and the dental care specialists at his Rio Rancho, New Mexico, clinic can repair the tooth with a dental crown restoration. This method of treatment will replace the entirety of the tooth enamel layer with an alternate material that will resist further dental attrition.

Dr. Barbara Lewis-Heywood will start by examining the tooth and taking some X-rays to assess the overall condition of the tooth. Then, he will form an abutment by removing the entire tooth enamel layer. This leaves behind a core abutment of healthy dentin that protects the pulp and root of the tooth.

Dr. Barbara Lewis-Heywood will then create a detailed impression of the area. This will be sent to a dental lab where your new crown will be custom made. In the interim, a temporary crown will be secured over the abutment to protect it.

A member of Dr. Barbara Lewis-Heywood’s staff will call you in for a brief follow-up appointment once the dental lab technician has completed your crown. We will remove the temporary crown and cement your new crown in place with a very strong dental adhesive
