Riverside Dental offers the following laser therapy/treatment.
We use the Novalis Medical laser to do the following procedures.
- Permanent Hair Removal
- Vascular Lesion Removal
Because Novalis Medical Novalis laser uses Krypton flash lamp source technology
Why a Krypton Flashlamp?
Old technology Xenon flash lamps result in excessive melanin / blood absorption at lower wavelengths which increases the risk of patient burn and ineffective treatment. Xenon flash lamps also have inferior depth penetration.
The Krypton flash lamp patented by Novalis Medical produces a “bell curve” wavelength pattern utilizing ALL the useful spectrum wavelengths without the excessive melanin and blood absorption wavelengths. Krypton wavelength output also specifically targets optimal chromophore absorption characteristics of melanin, blood and depth penetration.
This means that when compared to the traditional Xenon lamps, Krypton allows you to do more with less energy resulting in increased patient safety and comfort.
This is why the Novalis medical laser is more comfortable and has greater efficiency during treatment.
This type of laser is IPL; meaning Intense Pulsed Light laser. It can be used to do permanent hair removal in both light and dark skin types.
Facial Hair Removal at Riverside Dental
Melanin is a natural dark brown to black pigment occurring in the hair, skin and iris of the eye of people and animals. It is responsible for giving our hair, eyes and skin color. The more melanin produced by your body, the darker your hair, skin or eyes will be. Laser hair removal relies upon the fact that the melanin in your hair absorbs light. Light is one form of energy, the absorbed light is transformed to energy.
The pigment in the hair, which is melanin absorbs enough light to create enough heat to permanently damage the hair follicle, without having the skin absorb the energy. Remember your skin gets its color from melanin, too. If the hair follicle around the base or bulb of the hair is sufficiently heated, it will no longer produce hair. Doctors and scientists have discovered that by using a specific wavelength of light and properly cooling the epidermis (outer most layer of skin), the melanin in the hair will absorb most of the energy. This will create enough heat to destroy the hair follicle. The word LASER is actually a fancy acronym for producing a single, specific wavelength of light.
That all seems logical, but why then does it take multiple laser treatments to get rid of the hair in a particular area? Hair growth goes through three phases, anagen (active growth), catagen (resting phase) and telogen (shedding phase). As it turns out, the transference of heat to destroy the hair growing capacity of a hair follicle only works when the hair follicle is in the anagen or growth phase. Furthermore, all hair follicles are generally randomized, meaning they are not all in the same phase at the same time. Also, the duration of a particular phase differs for different areas of the body. When doing laser therapy for hair removal, we do not know what phase of growth is occurring. Therefore, treatments are usually scheduled 5-6 weeks apart to allow hair follicles to enter the anagen phase. For example eyebrow hair is only in the growth phase for 4 months while scalp hair has a growth phase of 2-3 years. The anagen (growth) and telogen (shedding) phases last the longest with the catagen (resting) phase typically lasting 2-4 weeks regardless of the body area involved.
Since hair growth varies between follicles and different body areas we usually say hair removal takes approximately 6 treatments, but for some patients it may take more, while for others it may take less. Anyone that tells you laser hair removal only takes a few treatments probably does not understand the physiology of hair growth.
Other factors also contribute to the success of laser hair removal, one of these is skin color. Remember melanin is also responsible for skin color as well as hair color. Therefore, the melanin in your skin competes for the light energy being delivered by the laser. As a result, there are different lasers that should be used on individuals of differing skin color due to ethnicity.
At Riverside Dental, Dr. Barbara Lewis-Heywood uses the Novais / Clareon IPL which has multiple handpieces that produce varying wavelengths for different procedures.
IPL: IPL means intense pulsed light. With the Clareon IPL, our team at Riverside Dental & Beauty Spa can offer a full range of cosmetic procedures with a single device. Unlike IPLs, lasers cannot change wavelengths so a different laser is usually needed for a different target. With the Novalis Clareon IPL just changing the handpiece, you now have the equivalent of a whole new laser. The Clareon has as many as 5 different handpieces which can do the work of 5 different lasers.
At Riverside Dental, the Clareon is used to do the following:
- Facial Hair removal (Light and Dark skin types)
- Skin Rejuvenation and Photo Facials
- Veins and Rosacea Removal
The Novalis Clareon:
Voted Best Intense Pulsed Light Device
Works with All Skin Types – Perform Treatments on Light and Dark Skin
Its technology can be upgraded which helps us to avoid obsolescence
Patented unique Krypton spectral output for superior efficacy with increased patient comfort and safety
Patented Diffuse Ceramic Light-Guide for homogeneous light output to eliminate hot spots commonly seen using other IPL systems
Facial Hair Removal
Is it painful?
By cooling the skin prior, during, and after treatment most patients do not find this procedure painful, although in some cases there might be a minimum amount of discomfort. The feeling has often been described as being snapped by a rubber band on your skin. After a procedure it is not uncommon for the skin to feel like it has been sunburned. This feeling usually subsides by the end of the day. For patients that are extra sensitive to pain we can prescribe a topical anesthetic cream to be applied 45 minutes before coming in for the procedure.
How long after the treatment will it take for the hair to disappear?
Treated hair usually grows out and falls off, unless it is removed during the treatment. However, since only hair follicles which were in the active growth phase will be permanently removed, some hair will return. This is why treatments are performed approximately every 4-6 weeks, to ensure that the new follicles in the active growth phase are permanently disabled. It will usually take 5-8 treatment sessions to totally clear a desired area.
Are there any special instructions I need to follow after a hair removal procedure?
There is really no after treatment care required. In some cases, patients will see in the treated area redness (erythema) or welts, but this condition will quickly subside. Since many patients indicate the treated area feels like sunburn immediately after treatment, they might find a cooling Aloe Vera gel comforting. Sun-tanning, however, is not recommended for a few days after during the duration of the treatment period, since increased melanin in the skin can interfere with more effective hair removal and cause more pain during each procedure.
How long do I have to wait between procedures?
In most cases patients may schedule treatment sessions as close as 4 weeks apart for facial hair and 6 weeks for body hair. However, since hair growth cycles vary by body area the time between sessions may vary slightly.
Once the hair is removed will it ever grow back?
When the hair follicle is disabled it will never regenerate hair. However, since the follicle can only be disabled during the hair’s active growth phase, it is possible that during a span of treatments not all hair follicles will have been through their active phase. This may require an annual touch up session.
Can blond or white hair be removed?
No, the best candidates for laser hair removal are patients with light complexions and dark hair. White and blond hair presents a challenge in that melanin is absent in these hair colors.
Is the treatment safe?
Yes, the treatment is very safe. Until laser/IPL hair removal technology developed electrolysis was the only permanent method available, but electrolysis is a slow, time consuming process. It is not unusual to take years, using electrolysis, to adequately remove the hair in a small area such as a bikini line or underarm. Laser based hair removal has made it possible to quickly and painlessly remove hair in all areas, including large areas such as backs and legs. However, at Riverside Dental we specialize in removing hair from the head and neck area only.
How much does it cost?
Charges are based upon the size of the area to be treated and the number of treatment sessions required. Most hair removal patients require 5-8 sessions to get all hair in the particular area to cycle through its active growth phase. Costs start at $125 – $500 per session depending upon the body part being treated. Riverside Dental and Beauty Spa offers Lending Club and BBVA Compass Patient Payment plans. If you have sun damaged skin or are uncomfortable going out of the house without makeup because of the appearance of your skin, you might just be a candidate for facial rejuvenation.
What exactly is facial rejuvenation? We define it as the use of laser and light-based devices, radio frequency, and microdermabrasion to improve the texture, tone and look of the face. Many people think this is painful and requires a lot of downtime, but nothing can be further from the truth. The newest technologies allow us to improve many of the imperfections which bother patients most without downtime or discomfort.
The most common problems cleared with facial rejuvenation are brown spots, red veins, or blotchiness caused by hormonal changes. What people don’t realize is these areas can be easily cleared without pain, bruising or irritation to the skin.
Improved texture is another problem people often complain about. They see that over the years their skin has appeared to thicken and the pores are larger giving the skin a ruddy or rough appearance. The intense pulsed light used in Facial Rejuvenation techniques reduces pore size and stimulates your body’s natural collagen production, producing a smoother skin texture.
The appearance of small blood vessels on the cheeks or the nose is another common problem that can be cleared with facial rejuvenation.
“The combination of facial rejuvenation with cosmetic injectables such as Botox and Sculptra can truly make your skin look healthier and you look much younger. Maintaining a youthful appearance is so much easier today due to medical and technological advancements. How long after the treatment will it take for me to see results?
Since facial rejuvenation covers a lot of different conditions, including resolving vascular lesions, uneven skin tone, sun damage and reduction of wrinkles and fine lines the length of time is dependent upon the patient’s specific concerns. In the case of vascular lesions and areas of darker pigmentation results will usually begin to appear within 1-2 weeks after the first treatment. Some patients will notice a reduction in pore size and a smoother skin texture within just a couple of weeks. However, to get the most from facial rejuvenation patients should expect the effects to be cumulative over a period of about 3-5 months and continue to improve up to 6 months after the last treatment.
What do I look like immediately after the procedure?
Most patients experience nothing immediately after treatment; others might see a mild redness.
Am I allowed to use makeup to cover the treated areas?
Since most facial rejuvenation procedures are either non-ablative or ablative with minimal downtime. There is no problem in covering the treated area with makeup immediately after treatment.

- Cherry Angioma Removal
What are Cherry Angiomas?
Cherry angiomas are benign (harmless) proliferations of blood vessels that appear as cherry-red bumps, most commonly on the upper trunk. Occasionally, cherry angiomas can appear purplish or be confused for a mole. They are usually small in size but vary from 0.5 to about 6 mm in size. The number of cherry angiomas increase with age; many patients aged 30 or over have a few on their skin.
How can Cherry Angiomas be Removed?
IPL: Intense pulsed light therapy can be used to treat these lesions. They may require 1 to 2 treatments. If you have a cherry angioma in the face or neck area and would like to get it removed please call Riverside Dental at 505-922-6000 or email us at email@example.com.

- Rosacea Treatment/Redness and Flushing
Rosacea is a chronic disease which affects millions of men and women. Topical and oral antibiotics are effective but leave individuals with treatment plateau associated with erythema and persistent flushing. IPL will reduce the redness, flushing and breakouts associated with Rosacea. Light therapy involves repeat treatments to maintain and improve skin appearance. Side effects are usually minimal. They can include temporary redness, loss of skin color and bruising in the treated area which eventually go away. Patients will require 1-7 treatments. Individual results may vary.
